What is a Yeast
Infection?
One of the most common of all vaginal
infections that a woman can face is a yeast
infection. With that in mind, while you
undoubtedly have heard of a yeast infection, you may yet be
wondering precisely what a yeast infection is. Through
this article, you are provided with a general overview of what
is a yeast infection to aid you in better understanding this
condition.
A form of yeast known as Candida Albicans
(as well as some other types of yeast in smaller quantities) do
commonly grow in the vagina, rectum and even in the mouth of a
healthy person. (Obviously, vaginal yeast growth occurs
only in a woman; however, yeast also can be found in smaller
quantities in the mouths and rectums of men as well.)
In an otherwise health person, in an
otherwise healthy vagina for example, the presence of a small
amount of yeast does not represent a problem. However, if
a woman's system is out of balance (do to other health issues,
poor diet, stress and a whole host of other potential issues or
problems) the yeast within a woman's vagina can end up growing
out of control. The end result will be an unpleasant,
thick, white discharge from the vagina.
A full blown yeast infection, in addition to the thick, white
vaginal discharge, can cause discomfort and result in a
noticeably unpleasant odor associated with the
vagina.
Normally, a woman's immune system and other
microorganisms that naturally can be found in the vagina work
together to keep the growth of yeast in check. As will be
discussed in more detail in a moment, when these systems fail
or get out of “whack,” the growth of yeast in a vagina
accelerates unchecked.
As an aside, when a yeast infection of this
nature occurs in a person's mouth it commonly is known as
thrush. The underlying nature of the infection is the
same as what is found in a woman's vagina. When it comes to
better understanding what is a yeast infection, it is important
to understand what can cause a yeast infection. Some of
the more general causes of a vaginal yeast infection have been
mentioned a moment ago. However, in understanding what a
yeast infection is, it is helpful to examine some of the more
specific causes of a yeast infection in women. Yeast
infections can be caused by:
-
hormonal imbalances
-
other physiological problems or issues that impact
the reproductive system
-
pregnancy
-
the use of oral contraceptives
-
engaging in vaginal sex immediately after anal sex
-
using lubricants that contain glycerine
-
using certain antibiotics
-
diet
-
transmission from a sexual partner
-
hormone replacement therapy
-
fertility treatments
When the symptoms associated with a vaginal
yeast infection first occur, it is important for a woman to
begin treatment immediately. A vaginal yeast infection
can quickly be resolved in most instances when a woman acts
immediately and begins an appropriate course of
treatment. In most instances, this can take the form of
an over the counter yeast treatment product.
